If you are looking to hide your unit or make it blend in more with the rest of your yard, there are things you can do.

The grass is green, trees and bushes have leaves, and you have likely been trying to spend as much time as possible outdoors, before the colder weather sets in. While our air conditioning is highly desired and enjoyed during our Buffalo, NY summers, the air conditioning unit can be kind of an eyesore on the outside of our homes. If you are tired of looking at it, we have provided some landscaping ideas for around your AC unit.

Landscaping Ideas for Around your AC Unit

Let’s face it, the outdoor portion of your HVAC system’s air conditioning was not created with appearance in mind. These big, metal boxes are not very attractive, but they get the job done and keep you, your family, and your home cool during the hot and humid days of the year. If you are looking to hide your unit or make it blend in more with the rest of your yard, there are things you can do.

Below we review some landscaping ideas for around your AC unit.

Fence it in: One way to hide the AC unit is to build a fence around it. You can add a short fence or taller one, the choice is really up to you and your style. Make sure to provide at least two feet of space from the unit and the fence to allow access and to allow it room to properly function.

Use a Trellis, Screen, or Lattice Box: A trellis, screen, or lattice box can be less permanent and expensive than adding an actual fence, but can all still do a similar job with hiding the unit. You can add plants and vines to a trellis or screen to blend with your landscaping. If adding a screen or lattice box, be sure to keep the top open to avoid interfering with the airflow.

Add Potted Plants: If you want to keep your unit out of sight, but don’t want to permanently landscape around it, you can add potted plants. Large potted plants are a great way to spruce up your yard and distract from the view of the AC unit. Plus, you can change them as you like, since they are mobile.

–  Paint the Unit: You can paint your air conditioning unit to make it blend in more with your home and landscaping. You can basically camouflage the unit so it doesn’t stand out as much. Be sure to use heat-tolerant outdoor paint to ensure it will last.

Add a Hedge: Adding some smaller hedges around your unit can hide it and make it blend in more with the outdoors. Be sure to keep them all 2 feet away from the unit and plant hedges that don’t lose leaves or needles.

We have reviewed a few landscaping ideas for around your AC unit, but the possibilities are really endless and up to you and your preferences. When trying to hide your unit, keep in mind, you should always have your unit so it can be accessed when you need maintenance or an AC tune-up.
