Lucky for you, in today’s world, there are lots of solutions to provide heat for you and your family. One of those options is ductless heating.

The colder weather is setting in in Buffalo, New York, and that likely means that you are starting to think about heating your home. Maybe you don’t have ductwork, or have a garage, basement, or sunroom you would like to keep warm, or just have a room in your home that stays much cooler than others and you want to change that; regardless, now is the time to think about your heating options. Lucky for you, in today’s world, there are lots of solutions to provide heat for you and your family. One of those options is ductless heating. We are going to take a look at if ductless heating can make a difference in your home and if it may be just the solution you are looking for to stay warm this fall and winter.

A Review of Ductless Heating

Ductless HVAC systems, also referred to as mini-split systems, are a type of air conditioning and heating unit that do not require ductwork for installation to transport heated or cooled air. These systems have two main components connected by a refrigerant line: an outdoor condenser and an indoor blower.

Ductless heat pumps, or mini-split heat pumps, are an alternative to radiator or baseboard heating, as well as a replacement for window units for cooling. The outside unit extracts heat from the air, even when it’s cold. Refrigerant carries the heat directly to the head(s) inside, which then delivers heated air to occupied space. In warmer months, the system works in reverse for quiet, efficient air conditioning (Energy Star).

Multiple indoor units can be connected to single outdoor unit: that’s where the “split” part of the name comes from. These units, typically wall-mounted, blow cooled or heated air into the room they’re in, cooling or heating it.

Can Ductless Heating Make a Difference in Your Home?

If you are trying to decide if ductless heating can make a difference in your home and is right for you, knowing the benefits of this type of system will likely help with your decision. While we have reviewed if ductless cooling is right for you and your home before, the heating portion of these units is also important, especially with our Buffalo climate.

Let’s dive into some of the reasons many homeowners are deciding to add ductless units to their homes:

Added and Zoned Comfort: With these types of systems you are able to heat (and cool) areas of your home that don’t have ductwork or stay cooler than others. A ductless split system is capable of heating and cooling rooms of your home independently of one another, providing zoned heating and cooling. You can adjust the comfort level of each room. This keeps you comfortable and saves you money. As an added bonus, you can have more warmth in areas of your home that are noticeably cooler than others or currently have no heat source.

Flexibility: These units are flexible in regards to location. Not only are they quite small in nature, they can go where ducts can’t. They can be installed mostly anywhere on a wall, suspended from the ceiling, or mounted into a drop ceiling. They usually have a remote control that makes it easy to turn them on and off, regardless of where they are located. While these units are small, some people don’t like the aesthetic of them, so that is something to keep in mind when deciding if this type of heating is right for you.

Efficiency: Ductless mini-split systems are more efficient than traditional furnaces, since the blower is located right in the room, and there is no energy lost in the home’s ductwork. Ductless systems can cut heating costs in half, compared to conventional heating systems. Ductless systems are extremely efficient and have the ability to heat and cool homes at just a fraction of the cost of other heating and cooling units. Ductless systems use 60% less energy than standard home electric radiators.

Simple Installation: If you are deciding if ductless heating can make a difference in your home, one of the main reasons may be because you don’t want to have to deal with having ductwork installed. These types are systems are easy to install. Ductless installation doesn’t require any ductwork, and can be completed in just a day or a few days. This makes the installation less expensive than a traditional HVAC system. Also, one outdoor condenser unit can be connected to several indoor blower units, which means that more rooms can be connected to the system as needed.
